Heading back to ski 600 miles across the Alaskan North Slope · 4 February 2023

We use music and sound to create opportunities where learning Disabled children and adults with complex support needs thrive. We make music with families, schools, health and care settings across the country and online, having fun while supporting health, wellbeing, and communication along the way.

Story

UPDATE:

My teammate and I have stopped the crossing of the north slope. The conditions are not suitable and we risked serious injury, or worse.

Instead, we will travel the west coast of Alaska, winter camping, skiing, and creating content which I will share when I get back to the UK.

And here we go again, a return to Alaska in an attempt to ski 600 miles across the North Slope. Howling winds, bitter cold temperatures down to -40C (hopefully not the -66C we experienced in Jan 2022) and a sled packed with around 130 kg of food, fuel and gear. Pretty much standard for expeditions.

As some of you already know, the last attempt on the North Slope failed. But my teammate and I still had a great time in Alaska (apart from catching COVID, being involved in a car crash with a huge truck, and gorging on food - that last part I did like).

This year we will smash this crossing and raise some funds for SoundAbout. I'll add some updates soon - route, weather conditions and photos.

Some of you may know I'm involved in the 3 month 'MoveAbout' event, and I've created this page as the primary location for donations which will then be fed back in.

Here's SoundAbout, in their own words:

At Soundabout, we believe that everybody deserves to have a voice.

Rather than focusing on what people can’t do, we want to emphasise what they can do.  We believe that people with severe and profound learning disabilities including autism should have a life full of expression, passion and enjoyment.

To enable this to happen we aim to educate, support and empower all those in our community. That’s why we use sound to enable people with learning disabilities to express themselves, connect with others and feel the warmth of music.

We want to create and maintain an open and accessible community where someone profoundly disabled can feel relaxed, safe, and enjoy themselves. We want to empower everyone to use their voice and create their own rhythm.

Our music sessions bring children and adults with various and complex learning disabilities together alongside their families and carers to take part in music-making, from our inclusive and virtual choir to our workshops.

Music is just the start; we want to help develop a sense of belonging and confidence for people to take through life, as we all deserve to live in a community without barriers.
