Story

We did it!

On 3rd July 2017, we became the first mother-daughter duo relay team to cross the North Channel, swimming from Ireland to Scotland in just over 16 hours. We were also the first successful crossing of 2017 and first ever relay of 2 people to swim the North Channel.

Why did we do it?

We swam the North Channel for the Maggie’s Centre in Glasgow a place close to Trisha’s heart, and a charity she supports through her business; Thorntonhall Therapies.

Thank you so much for supporting Team MAD and Maggie's Centre. Your donation will help support cancer sufferers and their families.

Frequently asked questions

How cold was the water?

12 to 15 C. The North Channel is one of the less warm swims!

How long was the swim?

18.9 nautical miles, (35 km). We ended up swimming around 38 km due to the tides.  We left from Donaghadee (Ireland) and finished when we touched the rocks at Port Patrick. As it is a relay we swam alternatively for 2 hours each until we finished!

Can you wear a wetsuit?

No. Under Channel rules, you can wear a swim suit, cap, googles, ear plugs, plenty of grease but no wetsuit.

What about the marine life?

We didn't quite realise how much wildlife there would be. We saw and swum with a pilot whale, dolphins, seals, seagulls and jellyfish.  Due to its depth, the North Channel is used as a training ground for submarines but we didn't see any submarines on the day.

What did you eat and drink?

During the swim, porridge, bananas, energy drinks and copious amounts of Ribena. After the swim, rosé wine naturally!

How much training did you do?

A lot. In the pool, lochs and the sea.
