Over a billion people in the world don't have access to safe water. Many women and children in rural areas in developing countries spend hours each day walking miles to collect water. The water is often dirty and unsafe but they have no alternative.
Carrying heavy water containers back home is an exhausting task, which takes up valuable time and energy. It often prevents women from doing vital domestic or income-generating work and stops children from going to school.
By trying to emulate how it must feel to carry water over long distances, often over very rough terrain, we are hoping to attract attention to the plight of our less fortunate friends and to help to raise a significant amount to support WaterAid's crucial work. We plan to walk around 50 km of the northern part of the West Highland Way carrying water containers on our heads (see us practising in the photos!) while, at the same time, hoping that our journey can help, even in a tiny way, to make life for others more easy.
WaterAid is currently undertaking projects, with local partners, to enable communities to set up and manage water and sanitation systems in 17 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific region. It is also campaigns locally and internationally to change policy and practice to ensure that water and sanitations' vital role in reducing poverty is recognised.
