The Horn of Africa is on the frontline of the climate crisis. This region used to experience one severe drought every ten years. But now children born in 2011 or earlier are already facing their third drought.
Most families in the hardest hit areas rely on farming for their income. And without rain, the things they need to get by - crops, cows and goats - are dying off, leaving children vulnerable, with many battling malnutrition and other life-threatening diseases.
The impact of the current drought:
- In Ethiopia, 2 million children are currently affected by the drought.
- In Somalia, over 900,000 children under five will be malnourished in 2019.
- In Kenya, over 750,000 children cannot get the nutritious food they need to stay healthy.
Weve been here before. We know what to do. Its time for us to act again. But we need to do it fast to help children in east Africa to survive, so they can grow up and reach their potential, like every child should.
