So I am climbing the mighty Donard to raise money for AdoptNI and in memory of my family of origin. I was adopted as a baby in 1976 and in recent years have been curious enough to piece together missing parts of my life story from those early days. From tracing services to group counselling and moral support, AdoptNI have provided an invaluable service, lifeline and hand of friendship, to adults dealing with the impact of separation.
Through their work, AdoptNI change lives by empowering adults in adoption and care. They provide greater access to information and can be the voice for those people who lose theirs.
Whatever stage an adult is at during their adoption journey, it can be emotionally demanding whether tracing, lead up to contact/reunion or indeed just dealing with the challenges and questions that adoption poses.
Adopt NI offer peer support on a one-to-one and group basis. Through listening and sharing experiences, peers can learn from one another and gain insight and understanding into theirs and others perspectives. Both one-to-one and group support are facilitated by an experienced member of their team.
In my experience, I have benefitted so much from just being able to talk to others and make a personal connection to people sharing my experiences. This has had such a positive impact on mine and other adoptees mental health and well-being. I can’t thank them enough for that. What I can do is raise funds to enable their invaluable work to continue.
