Rescuing abandoned, trafficked and venerable children from the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Providing food, shelter and protection from exploitation.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In Dhaka, you can see them on each corner of a street, unwanted, unloved, victims of sexual and all kinds of exploitation are these innocent souls. 680,000 children live on the streets of Dhaka, and they are increasing.. 80% of Dhaka’s street children are boys and among 50% are under the age of 10. They earn between 30-40 Bangladesh Taka ($0.51 USD and £0.33 GBP) per day.

They find themselves living on streets simply because there’s nowhere to go and no one to turn to. The society often denies their existence, but they are out there, and they are failed by a system that should be protecting them. You see many street children in areas such as Dhaka’s Sadar Ghat Launch Terminal, Kamalapur railway station, Kamrangirchor and around the parliament. They try to earn a living through begging, collecting garbage, roadside tea stalls, breaking bricks or pushing rickshaws. Some street children are involved in petty crime. The underworld gangs (mastaans) use the street children in drug peddling, snatching, toll collection and other crimes.

Muslim Charity along with local partners Local Education and Economic Development Organ-ization (LEEDO) is helping these children through the provision of protection, non-formal education and re-integration into society. The aim of our “School under the Sky” Project is to provide education, medical treatment, psychological counselling as well as clothing and life-skills along with re-integration of trafficked children into their families.

Schools under the Sky are held at the busy areas like Sadar Ghat, Ferry Station, Dhaka where most of the children sell their garbage and it is also an entry place for many rural children into the streets of Dhaka. The numbers of street children in the Schools under the Sky vary as per the weather and children migration trends within the city. Muslim Charity ensures that children are healthy through regular medical check-ups and by ensuring that children are being brought to the hospital in case of serious illnesses. Through social mobilizers it is ensured that these children’s records are being maintained and efforts are undertaken to re-integrate them into society.

Your support will help us to create a safe haven for street children in Bangladesh from the drug abuse, malnutrition and sexual exploitation that they face on a daily basis. Please donate towards our School under the Sky initiative through our Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Programme:

£30 per month would help us to ensure a roof and exploitation-free world for a month.

£100 would help us to ensure the journey of a lost child back to his family.

£300 would help us to assist a family to start up a small business to address the child poverty issues and ensure a child-friendly environment at home and in the communities.

£500 would help us to contribute towards the building of a shelter for a child in Bangladesh.

Please support us with any donation to assist the children on the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
