Event: The Uganda Volunteer Project 2022, from 2 July 2022 to 30 August 2022
We use play the power of play to enrich vulnerable children's lives.

Story

Play Action International is taking a team of volunteers out to Uganda in summer 2022 to assist with transforming an empty field at a local school into an exciting new, safe and colourful playground! This important work will create a legacy for children to learn and develop essential life skills as well as nurture their physical, psychological and social development through the language they know best - Play!

The best news I have for you is that I will be ONE of the many volunteers who will be joining Play Action International out to Jinja, Uganda in summer 2022; yes you read that right!! Growing up as a proud Isan girl living in the Roi Et province, northeastern Thailand, we didn't have the fanciest/biggest playground at our local school village, we thought we had bare of the barest (which is better than nothing) even though some things would have been broken, dangerous to use as metal parts fallen or snapped due to how old it was/overused it had been or the swings were wobbly but that didn't stop us being children, we were still able to experience the fun and joy of our childhood through play.

Unfortunately, till this day, millions of young children around the world won't have the childhood experience that majority are born with and they may never know what a playground looks like or have the chance to experience life and develop through play. The sad reality is that countless children wouldn't possibly get as close as the "little something" I had and looking at it like this, in comparison to what I 'barely' had to what every vulnerable and disadvantaged children won't have, I was very privileged and fortunate to have a playground. Which is disheartening and this opportunity will be once in a lifetime for me, an opportunity that I could only dream of but now I can actually say I am going to change more lives by going out to Uganda with a team of amazing people to build a playground, I would get to fully immerse myself within the community, joining in with the culture, connecting with people through rhythm and music during drumming sessions, and contributing to vital community initiatives and I would be able to work with children and the schools which to me is the most important.

So today, I kindly ask you to please help me reach the £1100 fundraising target for Play Action International, this will not go towards any personal costs of mine/spending money or personal essentials: this donation you make will go directly to Play Action International which will help more people like myself have the opportunity to go out to Uganda and make a huge difference.

I would like to thank University of York for awarding me with York Futures Scholarship and I would like to also thank all the donors and everyone at The University's Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and Alumni (OPPA) for giving me this opportunity; this wouldn't happen without you guys. Thank you in advance everyone! Nung xx
