Walney Island to Wearmouth (W2W) · 26 June 2015

A Newcastle University Centre of Research Excellence. Cancer is a major area of recognised strength in Newcastle. We have an impact upon oncology research and practice worldwide, but while it's us at the benches, we wouldn't be there without your help.

Story

Seventeen members of Northumbrian Water's Information Services department in Durham have chosen the Walney to Wear (W2W) cycle route for their annual Charity Cycle Ride.

We are a mixed ability group of riders, and some of us are not at all looking forward to the hills!
The route is approximately 152 miles from Walney Island to Wearmouth, and we'll cover it in 2.5 days (Fri afternoon - Sat - Sun); not easy going, but it's for an excellent cause.

We are supporting Future Fund, for Children with Cancer.
The advances made in childhood cancer in the last 30 years have been incredible. Eight out of 10 children diagnosed with cancer will survive. But despite the progress, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease among children aged 1 to 15 years of age.

There is still a lack of efficient therapies for some children who present with advanced stage disease or whose cancer has returned. In addition, the side effects of current treatments mean that 2 out of 3 children will develop chronic health problems in later life.

The Future Fund aims to raise £5.5 million to create a world-class research facility in the heart of Newcastle to make further advances in children's cancer research.

Every child deserves a future free from cancer and the long-term side effects of treatment. If you can, please donate today.
