In memory of Owen Corrigan (Ojo)

The Chesney Trust believes that a quality education is a girl's human right. We know that female education benefits young women, their families, and their country. Educated women know more about health and nutrition, marry later, have fewer, healthier children, and earn higher incomes.

Story

In 2011, in Owen's memory, family and friends raised a staggering £15,000 to provide a well and water storage system for the Edinburgh Girls High School in Malawi.  This was built in summer 2012 and the school opened in September that year.  In May 2013, Paul, James and I visited the school for the Well Dedication Ceremony.  It was a wonderful and moving experience and a beautiful tribute to Owen.  We were told in Malawi that because of Owen, they had been given water, 'the Gift of Life'.

The school now has 143 students from Form 1 through to Form 4. As the school roll increases, the water supply will need to be upgraded by installing a battery system so that power can be stored and used overnight to continue pumping water.  This will cost in excess of £3,000.

It will be 5 years on 6th January 2016 since Ojo was taken from us and I thought it would be a fitting memorial to raise funds for the upgrade of the water system.  To this  end, I have signed up for the Loony Dook  at South Queensferry on New Year's Day 2016. This involves plunging myself into the icy waters of the Firth of Forth while wearing fancy dress!   2016 will also be my 60th year and what better way to begin it!

It would be so good if I could raise some sponsor money for this event to kick off a year of fundraising.  Please help, it will make such a difference to our friends in Malawi and will also help to keep Ojo's memory alive.
