Story

As some of you will know, our younger sister Phoebe passed away in January 2019 following a year-long battle with retroperitoneal sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. She was just 24 years old.

Phoebe was the most remarkable person we have ever known, and she will remain an inspiration to us for the rest of our lives. She was kind, compassionate and gentle. She was quirky, hilarious and effortlessly cool. She loved animals - so much so that on her wedding day, less than a month before she died, her cats and dogs sat beside her on the bed as she made her vows.

What we hadn’t appreciated until she became ill was just how tough Phoebe was. We were blown away by her courage. She held it together while the rest of us fell apart. She showed incredible strength and determination to battle back from a 10 hour operation to remove a tumour the size of a beach ball from within her abdomen - a procedure that left her with scars, missing ribs and decimated stomach muscles.

She didn’t complain. She didn’t crumble. Even when the sarcoma returned and we found out that she wouldn’t recover, Phoebe never let it crush her indomitable spirit.

Witnessing the extraordinary bravery and strength that Phoebe showed each day has inspired us to try and accomplish something that we thought was totally beyond our reach. The London Marathon represents that for us. We want to push ourselves to our physical and emotional limits, just as Phoebe did every single day that she was ill.

We like to think that that Phoebe didn’t lose her fight against sarcoma - she just passed the baton on to us. It’s time for our leg of the relay.

That’s why we need your help:

We’re taking on the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon in order to raise money and awareness for Sarcoma UK - to change the lives of people affected by sarcoma. Support us to help us find better treatments, ensure people get the care they need, and fund expert information and support for anyone who needs it.
