Story
Everyone is aware of deafness, but do you know why supporting our Three Peak Challenge is so important?
• The number of young deaf men committing suicide is worryingly on the increase.
• Deaf people are twice as likely to develop mental health issues such as depression and anxiety compared to hearing people.
• 40% of children with permanent childhood deafness have a range of additional and complex needs including problems such as autism and learning difficulties
• Hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of developing dementia in over 60 year olds.
• Deaf children are less likely to achieve five A* to C grades in GCSE's compared to their hearing peers
Deafness is a very misunderstood condition that can bring a world of isolation and loneliness. The reality is that no-one dies from deafness but the truth is that the impact it can have on a person's physical and mental wellbeing can be devastating.
But, the good news is that by taking on this amazing challenge in aid of GDA, we will be helping GDA to continue providing vital and life-changing practical and emotional services and support that can enable a person to live confidently and independently with their deafness, away from isolation and loneliness.
