We run a school in Northern India to educate children from a local slum area

Story

On the 29th of May, I am climbing three mountains for Bright Sparks School in Mohali, Northern India. A group of friends (Patrick, Charlie, Doddy, Simon, Mary, Abbie, Richard, Sarah, Sam and Steve) and I are aiming to complete the Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing Ben Nevis (Scotland), Scafell Pike (England) and Snowdon (Wales) in a 24 hour period and ascending over 11,000 ft.

Bright Sparks school is a charity primary school that provides free education to over 100 children from the local colony (slum). If it wasn’t for Bright Sparks school, they would almost certainly be engaged in child labour from a very young age.

The charity also funds older students to attend the local secondary school and further their education. Bright Sparks has been operating for over 20 years and in that time has taught 1000+ children, over half of which have gone on to secondary school. We even have two former Bright Spark school students currently attending university, which is simply amazing considering how their lives began.

I have been involved in Bright Sparks since 2014, when I spent three months at the school and got to know the headmistress and teachers well. I was touched by their dedication to improving the children and their families’ lives through education. All proceeds raised through our hike go directly to the charity in India and are used to pay the teachers’ salaries, the school building’s rents and buy teaching supplies.
