Streetwise Opera - "I Sang on a West End stage" · 21 March 2010 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am raising money for a charity called Streetwise Opera. This is their description of the work they do with homeless people:
Streetwise Opera uses music as a tool to help people who have experienced homelessness move forward in their lives. We do this through a weekly music programme in 11 homeless centres around England and by staging professional opera productions. Streetwise Opera aims to produce work of equal artistic and social merit so we can platform the skills of our performers in an arena that is inclusive but not tokenistic. Underpinning our performances we run weekly singing sessions which our performers find a dependable source of regular activity in lives that can be chaotic and challenging.
The charity was founded by Matt Peacock. After reading music at Edinburgh University, Matt began his career as a singer, performing with the Chappelle Royale Choir in Paris. He returned to London and eventually got work as a music journalist. He became a volunteer for a night shelter and after reading a comment from an MP that 'the homeless were those you stepped over coming out of the Opera House' he decided to change the public’s perception. The shelter staged a short opera with professionals and homeless people…and so Streetwise Opera was born.
I have been asked to raise £400. In return I will take part in a performance on 21 March of extracts from Bizet's opera Carmen with professional singers and instrumentalists directed by Keith Warner on a West End stage.Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
