Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon 2017 · 8 October 2017 ·

Chordoma UK was established in 2013 as a special fundraising initiative incorporated into UCL Cancer Institute Research Trust. Chordoma is a rare, relentless and difficult to treat bone cancer that occurs in the head and spine in people of all ages regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation. During 2017 Chordoma UK became an independent UK registered charity and exists to (a) promote and provide financial support to encourage primary and peripheral research projects into chordoma and research projects that might benefit the understanding of, and treatments, therapies, and cures for, chordoma being undertaken at bona-fide research establishments within the United Kingdom and elsewhere. (b) provide patient support services and other support resources for chordoma sufferers and those connected with or related to chordoma sufferers (c) promote awareness into chordoma within the patient, healthcare, and clinician communities. (e) support individuals and organisations whose aim is to raise funds for Chordoma UK and (f) provide financial assistance for other charities or bodies as are in any way concerned with research into chordoma and other related cancers or with the furtherance of awareness of chordoma.

Story

After running the half marathon in October for Chordoma UK, I've decided to participate in the full London Marathon on 22nd April to further support this charity that's so close to my heart.

I was inspired to run for Chordoma UK after my boyfriend’s mum, Sue, was diagnosed with the rare primary bone cancer in 2008. This relentless cancer develops at the base of the skull or along the back bone and affects around 1 in 800,000 people.

At the time of Sue's diagnosis there was little information about the disease, resulting in Sue and her family struggling to get the support they needed. This inspired Sue, and her husband Gerry, to set up the charity in 2013 to raise money for high impact medical research to continue, with the aim of finding a cure and effective treatment for this disease.

Sue sadly lost her life in January 2018 after 10 years of fighting unbelievably hard. She is a true inspiration to us all, never letting her illness define her through strength, determination and her positive outlook on life.

I feel privileged to be running the marathon not only for Sue, but for all Chordoma sufferers. With your help I hope to raise more money for this cause, and any donation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for your support.
