Macaws' 5k Mini Marathon

Macaws 5k Mini Marathon · 16 November 2020
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost three years ago. This means that my body can't control the sugar in my blood without extra help. If I don't manage it carefully I could get really ill. I try to look on the bright side but sometimes it can be hard.
I have to think about diabetes all the time. I wear a sensor on my arm and an insulin pump 24/7 to help regulate my blood sugar. I need to have finger pricks regularly too which I hate because they interrupt me doing what I want to do and feel like a waste of time. Every meal or snack must be carb counted so I have the correct amount of insulin and I often need extra insulin to prevent me from going too high. It is really annoying because unlike my friends I can't just eat when I want to - I have to plan and sometimes wait before eating. I have to plan carefully for sport too so I don't go too low. Sometimes I have to have juice or haribo in the night too so my sleep can get a bit disrupted.
At the moment I will have type 1 for the rest of my life. Unlike type 2 diabetes it cannot be reversed. I really want the JDRF scientists to find a way to stop it.
This is the third 5k run I've done with my friends for JDRF. This year I am really excited to be doing it with my whole class - even my teacher!
Your sponsorship will help to fund the vital research needed to help achieve JDRF's aim to eradicate type 1. Thank you so much for your support.
