Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive neurological disorders, that is, conditions affecting the brain. Having worked in a care home for those with varying types and degrees of dementia, I know that dementia is increasingly becoming a more pressing issue for both wider society and the many individuals that either have it or have loved ones affected by it.
Indeed, research shows there are more than 850,000 people in the UK who have dementia. One in 14 people over the age of 65 have dementia, and the condition affects 1 in 6 people over 80.
The number of people with dementia is increasing because people are living longer. It is estimated that by 2025, the number of people with dementia in the UK will be more than 1 million.
Dementia UK aim to provide the specialist and compassionate support for all families that need it, through their Admiral Nurse service. When things get challenging or difficult for people with dementia and their families, Admiral Nurses work alongside them, giving the one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions people need.
I will thus do the Half Ironman triathlon (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run) in September 2021 and then the full Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.22 mile run) in July 2022 in Bolton to raise a minimum of £1,050 for Dementia UK.
The target was chosen as it is enough to fund a sufficient amount of admiral nurses without exhausting potential donors...given the impact that current events have had on everyone, it feels like a reasonable target to aim for. Significantly, those with dementia and their loved ones are feeling the strain both financially and emotionally; many are struggling to afford specialist care, and many more feel more vulnerable than ever and left behind as a result of this virus. You can make a huge difference.
All my love,
Omar :) xx
