Strike! Dance! Rise!
OXFORD RISING, part of ONE BILLION RISING
On 14 February 2013, the city of Oxford will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the global movement to end violence against women and children.
ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On February 14, 2013, the 15th anniversary of V-Day (www.vday.org), OXFORD RISING will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
On 14 February, Oxford will RISE at 13:30 with a choreographed flash mob to the song ‘Break the Chain’ in Bonn Square, which will be followed by an event at the New Road Baptist Church, focusing on stopping violence against women. Eminent speakers from faith groups, political parties and charities will make statements telling us why they are rising in support of ONE BILLION RISING; there are performances from the Oxford Vagina Monologues and In the Pink, an all-woman a capella group; and we will be showing short awareness-raising films, including an address by Eve Ensler, founder of V-Day and ONE BILLION RISING.
