******UPDATE*********

Back when I initially decided to raise money in honor of my mate Chris I wanted to get into the Montane Spine Race. Now…. This race IS the hardest in the Uk and beyond. It is one of the toughest challenges in the world.  Beginning in Edale you travel 268 miles up the Pennine way to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland non stop , unsupported and during the month of January. Competitors feel the full force of the British weather on a physically demanding trail. You have 7 days to complete it. Well I didn’t get in - so I signed up to the Arc ……. Until THIS WEEK. I managed to get a waiting list spot and despite the lack of focused and specific training for this type of event I’ve decided to go for it. Spine Race 2023 for IOM MS - HERE WE GO!!!!

Earlier this year I read a Facebook post written by someone who I would class as a very close friend. This post was distressing as he described his day to day struggles living with the condition MS. Having not met with him for sometime prior to reading the post, the image of him in my mind was of someone fully engaged in society, smashing life and being really funny with it. That’s exactly who he was and how he lived his life.
I didn’t respond to the post, I felt guilty having known him so well and not knowing about this for so long. I was just too wrapped up in my own life. I thought about it for days afterwards and spent a bit of time reading about the disease and how it affects peoples lives. I knew nothing of it prior to this. I had to reach out. I sent him a message asking him how he was and just to let him know he’d been in my thoughts. I wanted to help…I want to help!
We have been meeting regularly again just chatting and sharing stories. He’s still as I remembered. He’s really funny and smashing life but his everyday life is different to mine and yours now. Every time we meet I want to help more, help him and help people like him who are suffering with this disease.
But what can I do!? Well, I can run….
To help raise awareness I plan to run one of the UK’s toughest ultra marathons, The Arc of Attrition January 27th 2023. This is a 100 mile race around the coast of Cornwall which is not only a grueling distance and route, it’s run during peak UK winter season so anything could happen with the weather!
I know it will be tough but the reasons behind this race will get me through the hard times.
I am raising sponsorship for the IOM MS society, a charity which has supported my friend and others on the IOM who are living with MS. Anything that can be spared to help this amazing charity would be greatly appreciated.
