We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

Tobi and I have set ourselves the challenge of running the London Marathon in October 2021 to help raise money and awareness for the amazing independent charity, Brain Tumour Research.

Our motivation to take this on is in memory of our adored Mother, Lesley Kirby-Klappholz whom was taken from us prematurely on the 8th July 2019, at the age of just 63.

Mum had just reached retirement, having finished a highly decorated career in education, spanning a long but enjoyable 38 years, with 11 years of Headship. After a career dedicated to empowering our future generation, Mum had planned to spend her well earned retirement: Travelling the world with friends and family, supporting her elderly Mother, raising grand children and enjoying all of the freedoms that are typically associated with that period of ones life.

However, devastatingly on Friday the 31st of May, Mum was diagnosed with a Brain tumour out of the blue. Three weeks later the diagnosis was further compounded, following a biopsy which distinguished her tumour as a grade four Glioblastoma Multiforme.

Mum's story, like many other's with this diagnosis, is one of a rapid decline and an inevitable catastrophic fate. The statistics for Glioblastoma Multiforme are shocking, with 75% of those diagnosed not surviving 1 year and 95% not surviving 5. Making the mortality rate close to 100%.

Having experienced this relentless cancer first hand, Tobi and I believe that more needs to be done to provide greater understanding and treatment for our future generations. At the current rate of funding, it will take 100 years for brain cancer to catch up with developments, that have been made in treating other forms of cancer. These statistics are damning and will not change without increased investment into targeted and dedicated research.

We would greatly appreciate any donations, however large or small, to help support the fight against this horrible disease and of course in memory of our Mum, Lesley, a selfless, shining light in our society.

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
