24hr Swimathon O'Tooles Swimming School · 21 February 2007

For over 40 years Phyllis Tuckwell has been supporting and caring for patients and families who have been given the worst possible news in West Surrey & North East Hampshire. We rely on the support of our community as we have to raise over £25,000 every day to continue our amazing services.

O’Tooles Swimming School is organising a 24 hr Sponsored Swim on Sunday 1st April 2007 in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

The inspiration for running the sponsored swim came from first hand experience of the good work carried out by the hospice. Teresa O’Toole the founder of the Swimming School has a sister who is suffering from terminal cancer. The Phyllis Tuckwell hospice has been a huge support to all those that have been effected.

The Hospice was opened in 1979 and cares for patients that suffer from life limiting illness and their families too. It is an independent local charity. There is a 20 bed unit within the hospice which are used by patients needing symptom control, respite or terminal care. The day Centre is used by over 2,500 patients per year and a Community Nurse Specialist Team makes over 1000 home visits per year. It costs 3.5 million per year to ensure that the hospice continues to provide the service that it does to the local community and only 15.6% is funded by the government. There is no charge made to patients or families and the hospice relies on the generosity of the local community to support the valuable role it plays.

O’Tooles Swimming School is hoping that children, adults and families will help this worthwhile cause either by taking part or sponsoring someone that is. The event will take place in a relay format so you don’t have to be as competent as the Little Britain’s David Walliams to take part.

Each swimmer will be asked to swim for around one hour. However some of the better swimmers may like to swim for a little longer. The Swimming Teachers at O’Tooles will be taking part so if you can’t swim please sponsor one of your teachers. The teachers sponsor forms can be found on poolside.

The event will start at 10.00am on the 1st April and finish at the same time the following day. The finish will be celebrated with a small party for all involved. The local newspapers will be taking pictures and a cheque will be handed over to the Phyllis Tuckwell during this time.

If you are interested in taking part or can help in any way please contact: 01252 510654 or 023 924 30466.
