Double Whammy prison and treatment centre tour · 2 August 2013

Outside Edge Theatre Company offers free drama activities that help people at-risk and affected by addiction to live healthier lives. Our holistic, asset-based approach promotes the Five Ways to Wellbeing (connect, take notice, be active, keep learning and give) to help build Recovery Capital.

Story

Outside Edge needs £3000 to support a national tour of our acclaimed production Double Whammy. We’ve attracted grants and payments of nearly £8,000 so far. But we need to raise £3000 more to pay for travel and accommodation costs as our team perform in prisons, community drug and alcohol projects around the UK.

In October 2013 we aim to visit 12 centres and reach 1200 substance misuers.

Double Whammy is the story and struggle of Kelly, a graduate from a prison treatment programme. On the day of her release Kelly is met at the gate by her dealer ex-boyfriend. Offering her a lift he says that she can stay with him until she’s sorted. With £97 in her pocket, a five mile hike to the train station and the only prospect for a night’s sleep in a hostel for the homeless, Kelly begins to climb into his car not sure if she is ever going to get out again. Clean.

The 2013 tour builds on our work from June 2012 where 1,000 people in recovery engaged with performances of Double Whammy. In the forum that followed each show the audience was urged to stop, discuss and change the action. By taking part in the different scenarios, participants could explore issues that they themselves may have been facing ... until the relapse was avoided
