Our first encounter with Evelina Children's Hospital at St. Thomas' London, was when Owen was rushed there in a blue-light Intensive Care Retrieval Unit after he had been resuscitated at our local St. Peter's Hospital.
It goes without saying it was the most traumatic point in our lives. Owen stayed in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for 3 weeks. It should be called Intensive Emotional Rollercoaster Unit!
The facilities and staff at Evelina are second to none. Owen was treated with care, dignity and priority. By this point, Owen had an extremely complex myriad of medical needs and no amount of care or treatment was witheld.
The staff were meticulous and well informed. Being in a Children's Hospital there was access to all the equipment and specialists that Owen needed, including MRI scans, echo-cardiograms, ECG's, X-rays, cardiologists, neurologists, intenstinal and renal specialists, etc.
We have decided to support the ECHO-Evelina charity as they provide support for children with heart conditions which was Owen's most critical concern.
