Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I will post regular updates on my progress with finding field signs or actual sightings of mammals whilst on my walks or cycle rides.  By extending to 26 weeks, I hope to be able to travel further around Kent once some restrictions are lifted.  The end of the challenge will be Sunday 25th October, which happily coincides with National Mammal Week!  My mammal records will be sent to the Kent Mammal Group via their online recording page.  I would love it if other mammal enthusiasts could take up my challenge too and raise funds for the Mammal Society.  Team Kent Mammals anyone?  if you would like to participate in my challenge, let me know and I will add you to the team as a participant.

25/05/20  UPDATE 1: 10 MAMMAL SPECIES SPOTTED including Fox, Badger, Grey Squirrel, Brown Rat, Fallow Deer, Mole, Rabbit, Hedgehog, Common Pipistrelle bat and Soprano Pipistrelle bat.  The mole was by distinctive field signs (mole hills!).  The bats were by using a bat detector to hear their distinctive echolocation calls.  The hedgehog was seen dead on the busy A26 on May 21st.   The deer were a group of 10-12 individuals standing in a quiet country road until I drove up to them, whereupon they retreated into nearby woodland.  The grey squirrel and the brown rat have both eaten huge quantities of bird food from the bird feeders in my garden.  In a couple of weeks I will focus on small mammals such as mice, voles and shrews, by visiting suitable habitat and looking under refugia or in nest boxes (once bird nesting season is over for another year).  I will also try and expand the number of bat species heard by visiting suitable sites where there are large lakes.

27/08/20 UPDATE 2: 20 MAMMAL SPECIES SPOTTED with additional species including edible dormice (in Hertfordshire), beaver signs (in Kent), noctule and Daubenton's bats, house mouse, field vole, roe deer, wood mouse, common seals and grey seals (at Pegwell Bay).
