Mongol Rally: Poles of Inconvenience · 11 July 2022

ActionAid and DEC member agencies are working to meet all immediate needs including food, water, protection, and trauma care. Set up a collection and fundraise to help reach those in urgent need in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

Story

I'm Callum Morrison, a design engineering graduate from the University of Bath, and in the summer of 2022 (thanks to COVID), I am embarking on the greatest motoring adventure on the planet * - The Mongol Rally, alongside my good mate, Jack van Galen.

* second only to the M25 at rush hour.

This entails driving our (t)rusty 1.2 litre lunchbox from Oxford, UK all the way to Georgia (home of the cave city of Vardzia, the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, and some bears).

The Mongol Rally has been an annual event since 2004, raising money for charity ever since it's first rally with only six teams. Since then, it has grown to around 300 teams every year, and in 2022, that cohort includes us for the first time.

In previous years, the rally finish line was all the way over in Mongolia (hence the name), but due to various geopolitical and global-pandemical reasons it's a bit different now. That doesn't mean it won't be a monumental challenge, where calamities and shenanigans are guaranteed.

It's because of the aforementioned geopolitical issues that we're fundraising to support the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Heavy fighting, shelling and air strikes across Ukraine have had devastating consequences. Already, over two million people have fled their homes to escape intense conflict in Ukraine. Leaving behind loved ones, livelihoods and almost everything they own, they need shelter, food, and water. People are losing their homes and lives, essential services like water and healthcare have been hit and temperatures have dropped below zero. Please support my fundraiser to help reach those in urgent need in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. With your help we can support ActionAid and the DEC in scaling up their response and help families to stay warm and protect women and girls. - £10 could provide essential hygiene supplies for 1person for one month - £50 could provide blankets for 4 families to keep them warm - £100 could provide emergency food for 2 families for one month
