Stay Home and Bhangra for Khalsa Aid, in support of the Kisaan Movement

Stay and Bhangra for Khalsa Aid, in support of the Kisaan Movement · 1 February 2021
Since 26th November 2020, Farmers from all over Punjab have been peacefully protesting on the outskirts of Delhi, for the government to take back their farming bills that were passed in September last year. What this essentially means is that, rather than the government giving a guaranteed selling price for the crops that these farmers grow, the crops now being bought by the private sector depend on supply and demand, which obviously fluctuates greatly throughout the year. This means that for the vast amounts for the year, these farmers would earn very little and struggle to provide for themselves and their families. A huge number of Farmers will unfortunately be affected by these new bills. 16,606 Farmers have committed suicide from 2000-2015 and 94% of those suicides are due to debt. This is debt due to crop failure and law changes.
Whist peacefully protesting for the farming bills to be taken back, these Farmers have been greeted by police officers firing tear gas, cold water cannons and more recently, gun shots. The old and young, men and women continue to brave the freezing cold temperatures and rain season and refuse to back down on land that is rightfully theirs. The protest sites have now turned into mini settlements for our Farmers. Khalsa Aid are supporting the protests in and around Delhi through their team in India, who are working to provide Langar and other essential commodities at during the protests. Accommodation tents have been set up for hundreds of farmers to help keep them sheltered. Medical support has also been provided. But for this support to continue I need your help.
During the month of January 2021 I will be providing free, weekly Bhangra classes online to generate more awareness of the Kisaan Movement. As a grandson of a farmer, I want to do my part to continue to actively support Khalsa Aid International and the work they are doing to help our Farmers in India. So, I have set up a Just Giving page and set a target of £250 to hit by the 1st Feb 2021. Please donate whatever you can (even if it is £5). Your donation will help to support Khalsa Aid International, who are providing humanitarian aid our Farmers who are out there fighting for their rights, to get what is theirs. This is not only a farmers protest and struggle - its everyone's. We all need to come together. Thank you!
