A few years ago Patricia was diagnosed with Mylodysplastic Syndrome, a blood disease not dissimilar to Leukemia. In May last year she was given a bone marrow transplant that we had hoped would cure her. Following the transplant, Pat suffered a very aggressive form of Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) which over the last few months made her reliant on high levels of Steroids.The combination of the two left her greatly weakened and suffering uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms.

On top of this we were informed by her doctors in February of this year that the transplant had failed and the Mylopdysplastic cells had survived. This was quite a blow and it left mum fighting on two fronts; the mylodyplastic syndrome and GVHD. For almost three months mum has been hospitalised as the symptoms of the GVHD and Steroids became progressively aggressive and took their toll on her body.

In her last few days she was barely able to speak although she could hear those around her and often smiled.  Her death was not unexpected but it has come as a shock to us all the same.

We have had a number of requests from people who knew and loved mum to contribute something in her memory. We have had a chance to discuss this as a family and we think what would be nice is for those who would like to, to make a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Research Charity. This charity is solely dedicated to research into blood cancers, including Mylodysplatic Syndrome.

We feel a contribution to their work would be the most fitting tribute to mum.

En Mai l'année dernière, Patricia a reçu une greffe de moelle qui nous l'avions espéré devait la guérir. A la suite de cette greffe, Maman a souffert d'une atteinte très violente du "Graft Versus Host Disease" (GVHD), (la maladie du greffon qui agresse le receveur), ce qui a nécéssité pour elle ces, derniers mois, d'être maintenue à des doses très élevées de corticoid. La combinaison de ces deux éléments l'ont laissée profondément
affaiblie et en proie à des symptômes très gênants et souvent douloureux.

Là dessus , les médecins nous ont appris en Février cette année que la greffe avait échoué et que les cellules de la myelodisplastie avaient résisté. Cela a été une secousse pour nous et Maman s'est trouvée à lutter sur deux fronts :le syndrôme myelodisplastique et le GVHD.

Pendant environ trois mois Maman a été hospitalisée car les symptômes de la maladie du greffon et les attaques des corticoid s'acharnaient sur son corps. Lors des derniers jours, elle pouvait à peine parler et pourtant elle entendait ceux qui étaient auprès d'elle et souvent elle souriait. Sa mort était pressentie mais pour nous c'est quand même un bouleversement.

Beaucoup de personnes qui ont connu et aimé Maman ont exprimé leur désir de contribuer à l'enterrement, avec des fleurs par exemple, nous avons eu l'occasion d'en discuter en famille et nous pensons que ce serait bien, pour ceux qui le voudraient, de faire une donation à Leukemia & Lymphoma Research Charity. Ce groupe est exclusivement investi dans la recherche sur les cancers du sang.

Nous pensons qu'une contribution à leur travail serait la manière la plus adaptée pour faire quelque chose pour Maman.
