Story

Many thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page in honour of our beloved Mum, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Patricia Mary Saunders.

Mum was born in Caterham, Surrey, to Lundie and Mary Rees in 1935; the oldest of 5 children.  She later went on to have 5 children of her own.

In her early career, Mum trained as a shorthand typist and worked as a confidential secretary for a Professor at Charing Cross Hospital.  She then became a Junior Partner of a Secretarial College in Tunbridge Wells where she taught typewriting, shorthand, bookkeeping, Maths and English.

As well as being a mother of 5 herself, Mum was able to accomplish so much during her lifetime - she competed at Wimbledon Tennis Juniors, was a talented musician, wrote and composed a number of folks songs, appeared on both radio and TV in the 60's and 70's with her own song compositions, wrote and published a guitar tutorial on playing folk guitar which sold over 21,000 copies, published a poetry book, taught piano and guitar, ran the Compasses Folk Club in Tunbridge Wells for 10 years, promoted a number of folk singers and folk groups in the area as well as in Croydon, became a hospital DJ, appeared on The Weakest Link and sang a small solo in Tyne & Wear Metro the Musical.

Christianity was also a big part of Mum's life and she would always go out of her way to help others; she trained as a bereavement counsellor, helped mothers who had lost their babies, did volunteer work for many years for a Prayer Tower and did a short stint as a volunteer in Kent & Sussex A&E.  Mum also opened and ran her own Christian bookshop for 5 years in Somerset, worked for the God Channel Christian TV in the North of England; answering viewers letters and telephone calls for prayer and during her retirement years also spent 2 years in Texas, at Bible school, graduating in 2001 from the JSMI Bible Institute and School of World Evangelism when she was in her sixties.

Later in life, Mum developed Dementia and Alzheimer's, which is why the Alzheimer's Society is close to our hearts and one of the two charities we've chosen to raise funds for, in memory of our darling Mum.
