Most of you may never have heard of 'The Pituitary Foundation', they aim to give help, information and support to those living
with pituitary disorders, including patients, their relatives, friends
and carers. They also work to increase public awareness and act as
a 'Patient Voice' in order to improve services and policies to meet the
needs of the pituitary population.
You may also be wondering why we have chosen to raise sponsorship for this charity.....
Michelle has been diagnosed with Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, this rare condition is due to a problem with the pituitary or hypothalamus gland and is present from birth . It occurs in approximately 1 in 50,000 men and 1 in 70,000 women. This disorder can not be cured and requires hormone medication for life to prevent brittle bone disease,to enable a person to go through puberty and fertility treatment to have children. It is not easily diagnosed, and often is mis diagnosed or not diagnosed till late teens or early twenties, and can really affect self esteem.
The work the Pituitary Foundation does is invaluable to people having this disorder, providing information about the condition, treatment, emotional and practical issues, helping the people who have been diagnosed and their families.
Please give generously. For many years Michelle never knew what was wrong with her, just tests after tests. When a diagnosis was finally made, there was no support offered and the condition never fully explained. The Pituitary Foundation changes this and makes a difference.
