Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Some of you already know but others do not, however, last year Christmas (2019) I was able to write all of my Christmas cards myself, but unfortunately in March this year my sight finally deteriorated to the extent that I can only tell the difference between light and dark now. This has caused me difficulty in adjusting, especially under the current Covid 19 requirements. I find it hard to accept as I keep thinking that if I blink or wake up in the morning I shall be able to see something again. Fortunately I have some help with a carer/cleaner 3 times a week, a gardener and help with my correspondence and emails and writing Christmas cards this year, including my Village Community Transport Trustee role.
I have raised a few smiles with the many accidents I keep having, especially with making cups of tea and preparing meal and more worryingly – Knocking over glasses of red wine!!! What a waste :0).
On the brighter side, I ought to have joined ‘Sir Tom’ with his endeavours and created a sponsorship, as I now have the reputation of ‘The Blind Marathon Man’! which has had publicity in the local press and the Nottingham Society for the Blind Newsletter (My Sight). Having developed the community bus village routes, I know my way around the village very well so I established a 3+ mile circular route around the village which I am able to negotiate with my long white cane without too many accidents. Therefore every time I complete 9
laps, that equates to 1 marathon and I am currently half way around my 22nd marathon having completely 200 laps since April (over 500+ miles!) and worn out one pair of trainers :0)!! I'm setting myself the target of completing 250 laps by the 21st June.

Many people have a chat and ask me how the laps are going and I explain with a smile that I tend to get home black and blue, as although I stay on the pavements, many unthoughtful drivers also park off the road and together with wheelie bins, bottle banks and overgrown hedges I tend to get a few surprises
