Last year I walked 500 miles over 3 months to raise much needed funds for a charity very close to my heart - WAY Widowed and Young. The charity provides bereavement support to people that lose their husband/wife/partner at the age of 50 or under.

I became eligible to join this club that no one really wants to be a member, after losing my wife, Sue, to cancer, on Christmas Day in 2019.

Time for a new challenge in 2021!

In her memory on the 29th May 2021, I will be walking the 100km (62 miles) from London to Brighton over 24 hours i.e., through the night! Sue wanted me to crack on with life and she would be thinking that I am crazy doing this, but I know she is up there routing for me and knows that I will get over the line – in whatever state I am in. I’ve only ever walked 35km before on a single occasion.  I have been very fortunate that my girlfriend has been supporting me with my training schedule and accompanying me on walks up to 23 miles ❤️ although she won't be walking with me on the day.

There is a team of 15 widows  undertaking the challenge, some are doing 25km, 50km or the full 100km but each have our own fundraising targets and motivations.

WAY has been such a lifeline for me and for so many others, especially during this last year when a huge number of widows have found themselves living in complete isolation. Through my time in the charity, I’ve found support - both virtual and face-to-face - from folks who ‘get it’ and I’ve genuinely made some friends for life. I have also been the area contact for Suffolk for the past 12 months to give something back to this wonderful charity.
