Howzat?!!! Well it was tough...
But we did it – we all made it round and clocked up 1048 runs on a hard wicket and a hot day. Only one minute out, Tom Willows came achingly close to the 1 hour 40 minute target set by Guinness for the world record half-marathon in cricket kit swiftly pursued by Ed Watts who ran 1 hour 46 minutes. Two startlingly quick times in the circumstances.
Ellie Mills, Paul Clark, Kristian Kendall, James Rodgers and Alex Lees followed, all coming home relatively unscathed save for a few blisters and a spot of unexpected sunburn. The support from the crowds was first class throughout and we were all touched to hear the many shouts of encouragement for us individually and for Team Ed Ammon. Ed was never far from our thoughts and each of us is proud and honoured to have ran in his memory. We are so very, very grateful to everyone who sponsored us – the amount we have raised is testament to how much Ed was loved and is missed.
Thank you again,
Team Ed Ammon.
Ed Ammon - a father, husband, son, brother, uncle, mate, colleague, ten pin bowling legend, epic wedding dancer, cricket lover and player… and many many more amazing things.
If you were ever fortunate enough to meet Ed you would have liked him, everyone did. Altruistic and hilarious, strong and silent, always dependable, Ed was the glue that bonded many circles of friends.
On the 25th April 2019 a great tragedy took place; aged just 39, Ed died after an immensely brave battle with Leukaemia. Besides an army of friends and close family, Ed leaves behind his amazing wife, son (aged 6) and daughter (aged 3). What they have had to experience no family
should ever have to, but as we all know countless families do on a daily basis.
Words cannot do justice to their pain and loss but also to their resilience, strength and honour.
After Ed’s diagnosis in October last year, a group of us decided we would run the Great North Run to raise funds for Anthony Nolan Trust who do incredible work in all aspects of the battle against blood cancer and other blood disorders. Ed’s passing now makes the run even more poignant and has fired us up further to raise as much sponsorship as we can in his
memory.
Ed passionately followed lots of sports but Cricket he particularly loved, so in tribute to this love we will be running in full cricket gear; pads, gloves, box, and a bat if they will let us. This will be
hard for sure but as Ed would have undoubtedly said “be alright”! Indeed, 2 of our team will be looking to beat the world record for a half marathon in cricket gear, yes someone has done this already and it’s a punchy time of 1 hr 40 mins!
So please be as generous as you can to help us raise much needed funds for a very deserving cause. We all never know what life is going to throw at us. So when loved ones might need help amazing charities such as Antony Nolan Trust are there to provide incredible support but they cannot do it without your generosity.
Team Ed Ammon (James Rodgers, Ed Watts, Tom Willows, Alex Lees, Kristian Kendall, Paul Clark and Ellie Mills)
Every day, Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with a blood cancer or blood disorder. We do this by matching incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells to people who desperately need a lifesaving transplant. We also carry out cutting edge scientific research, fund specialist post-transplant nurses and support patients and their families through the transplant process and beyond. We won’t stop until we save the lives of everyone who needs a stem cell transplant. Every penny you donate brings us closer to that day.
