We raise money to support unpaid carers in the UK

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

When my mother was diagnosed with terminal renal (kidney) cancer, my father took the brave decision to care for her at home near to Cambridge so that she could have her last days overlooking their beloved garden. With two sons both living a long way away, the main care responsibility fell on my father and he needed support to give him breaks during the week. West Anglia Crossroads (now part of the Carers Trust) was the only organisation able to support with simple tasks like giving him a couple of hours off to do grocery shopping. They were able to do this so that my parents got their wish and my mother was able to die in peace at home. Sadly, there was no happy ending with my father passing 17 months later from heart failure (we have always believed it was a broken heart).

I always said I would try to raise money for this worthy charity and as we are now approaching the tenth anniversary of my mother's death (I don't like to rush my decisions"!) I have decided to do something about it!

With my daughter, Sophie, and a group of friends, I have decided to take on the challenge of the 60km Chemin de la Liberte Trail (also known as the Freedom Trail) from Aunac in southern France, across the Pyrenees , to Viehla in northern Spain on 20-23 July. This involves a significant climb of over 2,300 metres (more than twice the height of Snowdon) over four days.

This is the journey that the allied forces and Jewish refugees took, risking their lives to escape Nazi occupied France during World War II. In total there were over 33,000 successful escapes by Frenchmen alone and a total of over 6,000 allied servicemen escaped.

Please support us with as little, or as much, as you can. I can assure you our feet (and, in my case, knees!) will be hurting!
