Story
What have I done?!! During a very enjoyable St George's Day Lunch at the Lloyd Hall in Outwood, I sat next to my friend, former soldier, David Powell, Mayor Elect of Reigate & Banstead, listening to his account of his age related 30,000', World Record Tandem Skydive in 2014, and his determination to do it again, this coming August, at the age of 80, and at night! So, what could any retired solicitor, with no previous skydiving experience do, but go back home, ask Lynda's permission, and join him in his new World Record attempt. So, on either 18 or 19 August, 2016, I will be jumping from 30,000' in a High Altitude Low Opening Tandem Sky Dive, with oxygen, at night, near Memphis, Tennessee - which is the only place in the world licensed to provide these arrangements for civilians. The temperature will be approximately, minus 39 degrees below zero, with a dropping speed of 300 mph, and hopefully the parachute will open after only 2 minutes!
I recently found a letter from my Grandfather, John Pitts, to his parents, dated 8 September 1918, when he was stationed in Palestine. He writes, "Have you seen the baby and Grace (his wife of two years) lately? How are they looking? I hear he is getting a destructive little devil. I would give a lot to see him." He never did see his son, my father, as he died on 20 October 1918, just 3 weeks before the Armistice. He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, and the headstone bears the inscription: "There shall be no more death. For He giveth His Beloved sleep."
Every year, Lynda & I, plant a Remembrance Cross in the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, but I feel I should do more as my Grandfather Gave His Today for Our Tomorrow. For over 90 years The Royal British Legion has led the nation in remembering all those who gave their lives serving their country. Every November I wear a Poppy in honour of all those who fell while serving, but my jump will be a personal tribute to my Grandfather.
Your sponsorship would be very much appreciated - All expenses associated with the jump are being met by myself, so every penny will go to The Royal British Legion.
