Story
I am raising money for Care for Wild – a sanctuary, located in Mpumalanga, South Africa, for injured or orphaned animals until they are well enough to be rehabilitated into the wild.
I have volunteered there in the past, and it is a most amazing place with dedicated staff, and inspiring and tragic stories to tell. Adult rhinos are poached for their horns. The babies are often attacked and wounded, and then left to die a slow and torturous death unless the specialised rescue teams can locate them in time.
The work there is incredibly varied, from treating injured and/or abandoned wildlife to bottle-feeding orphaned rhino calves. As well as rhino, Care for Wild looks after many other species, including hippo, meerkats, antelope and even birds of prey among others.
Care for Wild's vision is to secure free ranging African Rhinoceros in protected sanctuaries across Africa and to ensure the survival of the species for future generations.
Rescue! Rehabilitate! Release!
Baby rhinos that are orphaned in the wild rarely survive. The mission of Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary is to rescue every black and white rhino that is orphaned, to heal them and provide a totally secure environment where they can grow, roam free, and breed to ensure that there will always be rhinos in Africa.
They have set up a treatment and care centre where they can tend to a wide range of injured or orphaned animals, until they are well enough to be rehabilitated into the wild. They enlist the help of veterinarians, nutritionists, ecologists, and other specialists, to ensure the successful
rehabilitation and release of these animals.
