Story
Back in 2010, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, had it removed using laparoscopic surgery with no chemo or radiotherapy. I have been clear ever since so decided to give something back to help others be as lucky as me. I have supported Prostate Cancer UK in the following ways:
PLAY2SUPPORT
This is a social enterprise I set up originally to raise money through sporting activities, primarily around golf, my current sport of choice. It has since morphed to include other areas and types of activities. All the money raised goes to the charity either directly or through this Just Giving page.
PAUL'S TALKS
I have used my geographical, geological and historical knowledge to develop a range of interest talks, which I give to local WI, U3A and other groups...so far there is 6 in total.
* Outlaws, Bandits and Raiders...The Rise and Fall of the Border Reivers...how a 'southerner' came to love the borders and to tell of its tall tales of daring-do and retribution (NEW in 2026)
* The Power of Plagues...How Pandemics have Changed the way we live our lives
* Building a Boundary...The History of the Anglo-Scottish border, from 400 million years ago to the present day
* Tynedale...The Landscape and History of the Valley (adapted to each part of this large border area)
* The Great Whin Sill...How this Volcanic Intrusion has affected our lives both now and in the past
* Jerusalem 1965...The Middle East and back by Post Office van, my Journey through a land ravaged by Politics and War.
TOILET ROLL FUND
For the last few years, in the autumn, the essity mill, Prudhoe, has donated a pallet of toilet rolls to be used as prizes or to encourage donations. It has proved to be very successful, raising in excess of £1000.
ALSTON MOOR GOLF CLUB PCUK COMPETITION
Back in 2017, Play2Support set up a charity 4BBB tournament at Stocksfield GC, which migrated to Alston Moor GC in 2019 and has been there ever since. To date the competition has raised in excess of £30,000 paid directly to the charity. Played on the highest golf course in England amidst the beauty of the North Pennines it is well worth you joining us next autumn to help raise money for a good cause.
PATIENT and PUBLIC PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT (PPI)
Volunteering directly for the charity in a number of ways including being on the small panel of patients responsible for reviewing applications for funding from organisations to support their research projects.
