2019 SWV Ski week · 8 March 2019 to 16 March 2019 ·

In March 2019 SWV will be taking 26 medically discharged Veterans to Switzerland. With the help of specialist adaptive ski instructors, buddies, medics and support teams this will be the start of their rehabilitation back into employment.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In March 2019, Supporting Wounded Veterans will be helping 20 ex-Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans with life changing injuries, back into employment through a ski-based support, mentoring and induction programme.

The veterans have suffered a range of injuries. At one extreme, some have lost one or more limbs, suffered paralysis or even blindness. At the other, invisible, but no less debilitating severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

I have the honour of being selected to support them as a Ski Buddy and I am aiming to raise a minimum of £1500 to help fund their place. 100% of what you donate will be helping the veterans directly. The Ski Buddies costs are met through the generosity, the people of Klosters and the ski resort itself,

I will be having training learning to ski blind, on one leg and on sit skis. We ('the buddies') will be there to ensure that the Veterans get the most amazing experience over the week, helping them in everything they do throughout the week, in their lessons, getting to & from the slopes and to regain their self confidence along the road to recovery.

I served for 13 years as a pilot in the RAF. I served in both the Afghan Campaign and the Second Gulf War as well as active duty in Northern Ireland. I’m one of the lucky ones, I retired from the military in 2005, relatively unscathed. Everyone that serves their Country on active duty suffers some form of PTSD, most of us are over it fairly quickly. Those that suffered the most, physically or mentally, deserve our help. They were willing to pay the ultimate price to serve their country, the price they are still paying is too high. Please help me to help them, however small or large your donation, it will ALL go towards helping seriously brave UK Armed Forces Veterans to lead the life they have earned.

Below are some quotes from veterans who were lucky enough to take part in previous years;

“In every way possible, Skiing with Heroes has turned my life around"

"A charity with a unique and intensely personal approach to rebuilding shattered lives"

"With my walking stick, I'm an invalid, in skis, I'm just another person"

"I feel like my life has moved on a million miles"

"It was as if a line had been drawn in the sand. I stopped thinking about the negatives and realised I could look forward to the future"

Many of the veterans struggle to find jobs on account of their injuries. The charity's work therefore continues once the ski week is done, assisting them back into employment & a life that most of us take for granted.

How can your donation help?

Mentoring a veteran typically costs £1000 per year, and the employment programme costs about £5000 per veteran. No donation is too small, but here's an example of how some donations help;

£25 - is a valuable contribution towards the Skiing with Heroes veteran assistance costs.

£100 - pays for a significant chunk of a veteran's one-on-one mentoring. Helping a veteran focus on a progressive, achievable life-plan is crucial. Such support can take many forms, from the building of business plans and instigating lifestyle routines, to seeking the right professional or medical advice.

£500 helps to pay for the full assisting of a veteran into sustainable employment. This entails everything the veteran requires from job seeking, CV writing and interview guidance to the point of job-start and beyond.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

All UK taxpayers, please remember to tick the gift aid box as this allows the charity to reclaim 20% tax suffered on your donation. For a £100 donation, this means the Charity receives £125 which significantly aids the programme. .

Thank you for your support, I hugely appreciate it.
