Reading Half Marathon 2019 · 17 March 2019 ·

Reading Samaritans are one of about 200 Samaritans branches across the UK and Ireland. Together, we provide a service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing emotional support to people experiencing distress or despair, including thoughts that may lead to suicide. Our service is confidential: we dont judge and we dont give advice. We do listen and provide human contact for people, some of whom may be in very great distress. We can be contacted by phone, email but unfortunately we are unable to receive callers in person at our branch. All our work is carried out by volunteers, but we still have a building to maintain and bills to pay: it costs us around £100 per day to keep running, and we are entirely dependent on donations. Every day our phone rings over 100 times. Your support will allow us to keep answering it. Thank you!

Story

Neither of us are runners. You'd have to go back to our Primary Schools for the last time we troubled the judges - Sarah won the Mixed Shoe race (ask her about it) & Paul the 75m.

However, carried away by the buzz of the town on race day, we made a pact to run it in what felt a dim, distant, far away year, that might never actually arrive. That year is 2019.

Sarah's aim is to complete the course, including the beer at the Nag's Head en route.
Paul's aim is to run a 'respectable' time, the definition of which gets slower each time reality creeps in.

We wanted to support Reading Samaritans because Paul volunteered for them in the past, so knows how much work the volunteers put in & the good that they do. The listeners offer emotional support to people in distress, including those having suicidal thoughts, by phone, as well as email, text & face-to-face visits. These people aren't paid, but donations are needed to fund what's basically a 24/7 365 days a year office.

Any donation is appreciated. Come cheer us on on the day.
