Story
I hate talking about this, let alone writing about it and then posting it on the internet for all to read. However... Here we go...
***WARNING SOB STORY***
It's true that Multiple Sclerosis (MS) isn't a life-threatening disease or condition. I believe MS is far worse than that.
The Doctors first diagnosed my Mother with MS in the early 1990's. Defiantly, she continued to live, socialise and work over the next decade. Even, travelling from suburban Surrey to her job in central London everyday, until her symptoms were too severe. The MS took her ability to do any of the former away.
I saw first hand, the progression of my Mother's MS symptoms. As a boy, some of my first memories are of her being aided with a walking stick. Today, she is completely bed bound and struggles to change the channel on the TV remote control. We have a wonderful care team that comes in four times a day to look after her every need.
The reasons why someone develops MS, whether it is lifestyle, environment or genes is still not clear. As the precise causes of MS are still unknown. This very worryingly, means that anyone could develop MS and no one can take steps to avoid it.
Currently, there is no cure for MS. There isn't much Doctors can do for someone with MS, patients are treated with pain management and they do their best to delay the progression of MS symptoms.
MS slowly, painfully and inevitably, takes a persons independence, dignity and mobility. As there is no cure and MS is not directly life-threatening, MS patients can live in prolonged pain and constant suffering. I would never wish this condition on my worse enemy.
However, there is hope. Not only does the MS Society provide information, support and services to people living with MS and their families, they fund millions of pounds in research each year. Their goal is for everyone living their lives free from the effects of MS.
This is why I will be running the 26.2 miles in the 2020 London Marathon for the MS Society. This one's for you Mum.
Thank you for taking time to read my page.
Please support me and let's stop MS together.
