Round Rockall Rival Rally · 7 July 2018

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust inspires young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer. For many young people simply picking up where they left off before their diagnosis just isn’t possible. So, when treatment ends the Trust’s work begins.

Story

Round Rockall Rival Rally

Just for fun, and maybe because it’s there, a small fleet of
“Rival” yachts plan to set of from Castlebay, Isle of Barra in the Outer
Hebrides and then sail to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, leaving Rockall to
starboard.

Rockall is the furthest flung part of the British Isles, its
about 200 nautical miles out into the Atlantic west of the Outer Hebrides, and they are fairly remote themselves.

Rockall is, as its name suggests, just a barren rock
sticking out of the sea.  In perfectly calm conditions it is just about possible to land: there are some exciting film clips on YouTube of people trying to do so such as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bE_GmW1Et0

“Rival” yachts are legendary “go anywhere” British built
yachts. This year is the 50th anniversary of the launching of the
first Rival 31. Countless Rivals have crossed oceans, some have
circumnavigated, one even won the OSTAR. There is plenty of information about Rivals here  https://www.rivalowners.org.uk/

At present there are 6 boats planning to depart Castlebay on
6th July with another three or four considering the adventure. This
will be the biggest fleet to have ever set off to sail round the rock, and
uniquely they will all be the same class of boat.

Some of us want to use the RRRR as a fund raising platform
for charities with which we are associated. I going to be doing a bit of
sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust so I will be fundraising for it.

There is lots of information about the Ellen MacAthur Cancer Trust if you follow the link at the top right of this page. The EMCT does wonderful work. Read about it and donate.

My target is £3600.00 This is the cost of a one week voyage
for a group of 6 young people who are recovering from cancer.

So, if 100 generous people were each to donate £36........................or if 200 generous people were to donate £18................or 360 generous people were to donate £100..................I could go on
