Story

In memory of my son, Harry Edward Weir

As my 50th birthday looms, I decided to complete a challenge to raise money for Charity.

So I am now officially doing the Coast to Coast walk in September, commencing on Saturday 4th.

I will be travelling to St. Bees in Cumbria on Friday evening to start early on the Saturday morning.

My aim is to do the 195 miles in a maximum of 9 days!

Although it’s not something I share often, or talk about, I think it is important to tell the story, to give you an idea of why I have chosen the charity PACT to raise money for.

My son was diagnosed 2 weeks before his 1st Birthday with a kidney tumour, which after a short course of Chemotherapy, was removed along with his kidney.

The tumour was 1 kilo in weight!

We then had a further longer course of Chemotherapy sessions all at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where I met Beryl Welburn, who introduced me to PACT, and explained how they support children and parents whilst they are in hospital and beyond the end of their treatment.

I stayed in PACT House on a number of occasions, and was very grateful of the help that they offered.

Sadly, Harry was later diagnosed with multiple brain tumours and tumours along his spinal column.

We were then told that there was nothing more they could do, but we agreed for him to undergo brain surgery to remove the largest tumour from the frontal lobe, which I still believe, gave him a better quality of life for the remaining 4 months of his life.

On 3rd of April 2005, I lost my son, Harry, to his battle with cancer.

I remain in contact with PACT, and wanted to give something back for how they helped me.
