London Marathon 2021 · 3 October 2021 ·
On October 4th 2020, I walked the Virtual London Marathon in aid of Prostate Cancer Research Centre (PCRC).
Unfortunately after several months of training, I had to withdraw from the previous year’s marathon due to a stress fracture in my tibia, which happened a few weeks before the event. I was absolutely gutted, but thankfully the lovely team at PCRC offered me a guaranteed place to run in 2020 instead. As we all know, the 40th London Marathon was unable to go ahead due to Covid and further injury over the summer meant I was unable to run my first marathon as planned. So I decided to walk the 26.2 miles instead, around some of the green spaces of south London, including Tooting, Wandsworth and Clapham Commons, as well as Battersea Park and Hyde Park, which took me 7 hours, 54 mins and 51 seconds.
I'm really excited that I now have a place confirmed for the 41st London Marathon on October 3rd 2021, which I fully intend to run (rather than walk) this time!
Those of you who have already sponsored me, your support has been fantastic and it means an awful lot to me, my family and PCRC.
If you're visiting my page for the first time, welcome! Your donation will be a huge boost to morale and my fundraising efforts, so thanks so much for clicking on the link and supporting me. x
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK and 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. The chances are you know someone affected by it too.
In 2014, my dad, Len was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 63, as was my dad's brother Paul, aged 54. They went through a hellish time, but we're eternally thankful for the fantastic care they received whilst they underwent their treatment and they are now doing well, but will require regular monitoring and PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood tests from hereon in.
Sadly this is an all too common story and the numbers affected are increasing every year. 40% of men diagnosed have life-threatening prostate cancer and 75% of them die from the disease within 5 years. The mission of PCRC is to develop new therapy for men with advanced prostate cancer, with the immediate goal of increasing survival. Their vision is finding a cure for the disease.
Every pound I raise will help their research, so if you're able to help support me through my challenge, it would be massively appreciated by me, my family and PCRC. You'd be contributing to their essential, life-changing research and helping to push me towards the finish line and beyond!
Guys - If you're over 45 years old yourself, please do get yourselves checked out. It involves a simple PSA blood test and early detection can make an enormous difference.
Thanks for visiting, big thanks for your help and please do wish me luck!
