Story

Enjoy the natural beauty and splendour of the Avon Gorge by making the Portway PEACEFUL and TRAFFIC FREE on special days!

The Portway runs alongside the River Avon through a steep gorge, over arched by Brunel's famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.  The Avon has the second highest tidal range in the world, providing a unique environment for wildlife, and the majestic cliffs make this the most impressive urban climbing area in the country.

Normally, the Portway is full of traffic travelling at 40-50 mph so it's difficult to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding you when walking, cycling or climbing there.

Peaceful Portway is an initiative to close the Portway to traffic, from Cumberland Basin to Sea Mills, regularly on summer Sundays.  It is supported by a range of interested parties; organisations with ownership rights or statutory responsibilities for the Avon Gorge (e.g. Bristol City Council, Avon Wildlife Trust), community groups (e.g. Hotwells & Clifton Community Association) and user groups (e.g. the British Mountaineering Council, Sustrans, Bristol Ramblers).  The umbrella charity for Peaceful Portway is Hotwells & Clifton Community Association.  However, in the current economic climate, support doesn't mean money and in order to continue the Peaceful Portway initiative we need to raise funds in other ways.

During 2015 - Bristol Green Capital year - we extended closure of the Portway to traffic 5 times after major events, in 2016 we did this twice, and in 2017 we are planning to do it once on 17 September (after the Bristol half marathon).

Ideally we would like to see the Portway free of traffic several Sundays each year so that the people of Bristol can safely and regularly enjoy the beauty and splendour of the Avon Gorge in its natural state.  Peaceful Portway will give people the chance to wander, listen to birdsong, forage for food, play, cycle, climb and much more....

Closing the road to traffic, even piggybacking on another event, costs money and we are aiming to raise at least £8,000 (it costs around £2,500 for each road closure).  Funds will be used to pay for the September 2017 road closure and enable the initiative to continue in the future.  Money raised will pay for:

  • Road closure (signs and barriers, etc)
  • Security
  • First Aid
  • Entertainment and activities
  • Toilet facilities
  • Encouraging everyone to come along

Please make a contribution so that Peaceful Portway can become an established feature of this wonderful city of ours.  And pass this link on to your friends.  Thank you!
