Congenital heart disease is one of the biggest killers of infants. Every 2 hours a baby is born with a serious heart defect. Our specialist training means that now more than half of them are picked up during pregnancy. This is why Tiny Tickers exists; to give babies a better start in life.

Story

Thank you for taking time to read this.

When Isaac was born we had no idea he had the middle of his heart missing or that his valves weren’t formed correctly. Thankfully because he was born with Down’s Syndrome he had a cardiac scan at 10 weeks old and his heart defect was discovered. This meant we knew what signs and symptoms to watch out for, we could be as prepared as possible for his open heart surgery.

It is now 5 years since Isaacs surgery, his valves are being relatively well behaved with a little help from medication. We know he will need more open heart surgery in the future. It’s hard as a parent to hand your child over, to know they are stopping his heart and there’s a high chance it may not restart. It’s hard to know you will do it again. But we are the lucky ones,  we have him to love, cuddle and cherish. Others are not so lucky.

Tiny Tickers trains sonographers so that more fetal heart defects are detected in pregnancy. Each year 1000 newborns leave hospital with an undetected heart condition, we need this to reduce. £75 is the cost to train one sonographer. Each diagnosis is priceless to a family.

We are under no illusion that this challenge is going to be difficult for us. We aren’t athletic, we are fully expecting blood, sweat and tears (and blisters) but if one family gets a diagnosis and one baby’s life is helped by us doing this then it has been worth it all.

We have set our goal at £750 which would train 10 sonographers. If you could help us by donating anything we will be very grateful. You really could make a difference.

Thank you.
