Completing all 95 Ethels in Derbyshire · 30 October 2021

Its aims are to save life and alleviate distress, primarily in Upland and Mountain areas although teams are called upon by the Police to search lowland areas for missing people.

Story

Pecsaetan is a local women's Cotswold Morris Dance Team based in Sheffield. As well as dancing we also enjoy walking in and around the wonderful countryside that surrounds Sheffield. As we have done more walking as a team in the last 18 months when we haven't been able to meet for regular dance practices, we felt that we wanted to raise money for the local Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation for a number of reasons;

1) they are a fantastic organisation who need more support, especially since the pandemic increased the number of people who needed their services as so many of us explored the big outdoors more than ever while we couldn't socialise indoors

2) they've recently helped several people who are very dear to us as a team

3) Pecsaetan means "People of the Peak" and we have a strong connection to the Peak District National Park, and the Longshaw Estate in particular (where we have harvested many of our sticks over the years), neither of which would exist in their current form if it wasn't for the amazing work of Ethel Haythornthwaite, and neither of which would be as safe to visit if it wasn't for the existence of Mountain Rescue

With this in mind we have decided to climb all 95 "Ethels" in the Peak District.* Ethel Haythornthwaite was an environmental campaigner who was instrumental in establishing the National Parks we have today and in helping to save the Longshaw Estate. In total, the Peak District Ethels list has 95 hills, tors, edges and trigs. It includes every hill over 400 m in the Peak District (including Mam Tor, Kinder Scout, Shining Tor), as well as some other lower iconic Peak District hills (including Thorpe Cloud, Parkhouse Hill).

We have set ourselves the challenge of completing this list as a team by the end of April 2022.

*Please note, where we're unable to gain permission from landowners to access the summit of any Ethel on private land, we'll go to the nearest available point with public right of way.
