Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page in memory of our Mum, Peggy.
Our Mum was born on the 5th August 1925 in Hornsey, North London, to Vera & Ted. and had an older brother, Frank, who gave her the name Peggy after a character in a book he was reading.
During her childhood Peggy joined Brownies & Girl Guides and later on became a Sunday School teacher and Cub Leader. She left school at 14 to serve a 4 year apprenticeship to become a hairdresser and wig maker, something she enjoyed very much.
Frank was also instrumental in her meeting our Dad, Stan, who she married in 1947. They had a very strong and happy marriage and gave us both a delightful childhood with lovely memories of holidays at the seaside and Christmas times spent with family and friends. These occasions very often included card games and Scrabble was an all time favourite.
Family was very important to Peggy and she was delighted when her grandchildren, Laura, Nicholas, Alasdair, Katie and Lewis were born. She loved baking and made various novelty birthday cakes for her older grandchildren, the younger ones lived in Scotland so baking for them was not so easy!
After Dad retired they moved to a bungalow in Mannings Heath but with Stan's health deteriorating they moved to a warden assisted flat in Roslan Court, Horley. This was a very good move as Stan only survived for a couple of years after this and Peggy found great friendship and camaraderie here. She really showed her strength of character as she had problems with her legs and walking was difficult for her, but determination meant she joined in all the activities and enjoyed socialising and helping others who were less able than her.
After breaking her hip four years ago she was wheelchair bound and was therefore forced to give up the flat she loved and move to a nursing home. We are extremely grateful to everyone at Upper Mead for the care she received in the Home. Peggy again joined in all the activities and became an integral participant in any quizzes or games played and she really enjoyed the "Church" services which took place there.
We are delighted that Peggy was able to join most of the immediate family at Laura & Paul's wedding in March this year and we have wonderful photographic memories of this also - a legacy from Stan who always had a camera to record any family events.
It is in tribute to Upper Mead that we have chosen the Alzheimers Society as they were holding a Tea Party in aid of this charity today, 9th July, and Peggy also suffered from slight dementia herself.
