Valeria, her husband and four-month-old baby Salah-Arslan are among over a million people that have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the escalating conflict in Ukraine. Most of the people who have been uprooted are women and children.
The family were living happily at their home in Cherkasy, central Ukraine. Valeria was studying for a master’s degree in international economic relations. When the conflict escalated, Valeria and Salah-Arslan spent a night cowering in a basement. As the situation quickly deteriorated, Valeria made the wrenching decision to leave the family home. They packed and fled quickly. The shelling of the city started shortly after they left.
As conflict continues to escalate in Ukraine, millions of children and their families are in danger.
The whole child population of Ukraine, 7.5 million children, is now at risk as the conflict continues to escalate. With explosions in major cities across the country and thousands of families being forced to flee their homes, UNICEF is calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Homes, schools, water supplies and hospitals have been damaged or destroyed. Children have been separated from their families and hundreds of thousands of people have been left without safe water, electricity or water. Explosives including landmines are a daily threat to children’s lives.
More than 3 million people have now fled Ukraine, with the number expected to climb to 5 million.
