Story

In 2005, Gary was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer. Our children Olivia and James were 5 years and 22 months respectively. All of a sudden life had changed in a way we could scarcely take in. It had already been a difficult year, as 6 weeks earlier, Olivia had undergone open heart surgery. His prognosis was guarded, and we feared that his time with us could well be limited.

Gary underwent 3 major surgical operations to remove the tumours from his bowel and liver, followed by chemotherapy. He returned to work 15 months later, and things were looking positive.

The cancer returned in his lungs in 2007, this time surgery was not possible. He underwent regular chemotherapy treatment, and maintained as normal a life as possible; he continued to enjoy family holidays, walking the dog, going to the pub, and of course watching Liverpool. He had the very best medical treatment from his surgeons and oncologists, and most of the time he felt well.

Gary passed away in September 2010 after only a short final illness- only 10 days earlier he had taken his recently widowed mum, and the children for a day out on James's 7th birthday.

I decided to do the Hadrian's wall trek last year. I spotted it on the Beating Bowel Cancer website. It will be 26 miles in a day over rough and terrain. Thanks to all who have supported me with child care and advice on training and kit.

I am also walking in memory of my dad, Jack Fisher, who died from bowel cancer in 1990. We were walking pals, and had talked about walking Hadrian's wall together, but never got to do so.
