Story
We are members of the Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service.
Our team works with women with severe mental health difficulties during pregnancy or up to 12 months after baby is born. The service is run by Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust.
Our team are running this half marathon to raise awareness of Perinatal Mental Health, to reduce stigma and to raise money that can go towards the Perinatal fund held by the Heads On charity. These funds can be accessed to support women and their families who are under our service.
During pregnancy and the post natal period, women's risks of developing a significant mental illness increases significantly.
Post natal mental illness can happen to anyone, statistics show that 1 in 1000 women will experience post partum psychosis.
10-15 women in every 100 will experience post natal depression . (These figures come from the Royal College of Psychiatry)
Mental illness can make it harder for a women to bond with her baby and can lead to feelings of guilt and shame. Some women find it hard to talk about these issues. It is important to reduce stigma so that people feel able to ask for help.
Please help us carry the torch to reduce stigma, support women and promote better outcomes for future generations.
