Virtual London Marathon 2021 · 3 October 2021 ·
In June 2021, I chaired a virtual meeting for "Dying Matters" week, with invited speakers from Greenwich Cruse, the local hospice and the local hospital. While the manager of Greenwich Cruse talked about the different needs around supporting people through bereavement, I had a mini-meltdown, and was so choked up, I couldn't even introduce the next speakers. To say his comments struck a chord is an understatement. And this, from someone who hasn't lost anyone to COVID, or anything else, in recent years. I knew immediately, that Greenwich Cruse was the charity I wanted to run the London Marathon 2021 for.
As a country, we're not so good about talking about death and dying or loss. I know I haven't been very good at finding the right words, or deeds, to support those I know who have lost a loved one.
I would love more people in Greenwich to be able to reach out to the experts who can help them get through the worst, whenever they need it. Greenwich Cruse needs more funding to train more volunteers, provide more support groups and 1-2-1 sessions for more people who are grieving.
