Story
Our son Tim was a perfectly happy two year old boy when out of the blue he had a massive stroke which totally changed the rest of his, and the rest of the family's life.
157,000 people suffer a stroke every year – 25% of them are under retirement age and several hundred are under 16. Tim unfortunately was even more special, being only one of a handful of people a year to become a stroke victim at an even younger age.
Services for such young stroke survivors are almost non existent. As well as the physical challenges (which as a 17 year old Tim still has), as young stroke victims get older there are a huge number of psychological challenges on top of the normal teenager ones!
Different Strokes was established by a group of younger stroke survivors. It is still very largely managed and staffed by younger stroke survivors and those who have had close personal experiences of strokes in younger people. They support young stroke survivors to help them take control of their own lives and regain as much independence as possible by offering 'rehabilitative services', information and advice.
This is the first time I have ever done any major fund raising. Having missed the opportunity to raise funds whilst loosing 6 stone in weight in the last 8 months I thought what better way of raising funds. I certainly would have struggled to run 13.1miles last September carrying around the equivalent weight of 38 bags of sugar!
So whether for Tim's cause (even as a grumpy teenager he will appreciate it!) or more selfishly for me shedding 34% of my bodyweight (work the maths out to see how fat I was!) thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.
